PCC signs HIV Stigma Statement
Mrs Bourne, who visited the Terrence Higgins Trust in Brighton on Friday (28 Nov) and joined others in making a stand against HIV stigma, said: “Today (1 Dec) is World AIDS day. Despite huge progress in care and treatment for people living with HIV, it is still a stigmatised illness, and discrimination and prejudice remain issues of concern to many people living with HIV.
“People have regularly reported being treated disrespectfully, receiving poor service or being discriminated against because of their HIV status. This can then act as a barrier when it comes to encouraging more people to come forward and be tested.
“As PCC I want to see agencies and communities supporting those living with HIV and encouraging them to come forward if they have been a victim of hate crime or discrimination.”
