Listening to the front line and tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) is top of the agenda for Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne at her monthly Performance and Accountability Meeting (PAM) this Friday.

She’ll be questioning Deputy Chief Constable Jo Shiner about the Force’s response to the recently published Home Office Front Line Policing Review and asking what their plans are to listen to and better support their officers. An update will also be given on the current recruitment drive and how the extra 250 officers and 100 PCSOs, over the next four years, will help alleviate some of the pressures currently placed on the front line.

The PCC will also be asking what measures the police can put in place to tackle persistent ASB offenders and to highlight successes and challenges in working with local partners to identify young people at risk of being drawn into criminal and violent behaviour.

Commenting ahead of the meeting, on the Front Line Review, Mrs Bourne said:

“The Front Line Review was a unique opportunity for all operational staff in police forces in England and Wales to feedback on their experiences, concerns and ideas. It clearly shows the increased demands and pressures of 21st century policing, especially the physical and mental impact this can have on police officers and police staff.

“I welcome in particular the recommendation to ensure consistent and ready access to wellbeing support and professional development. I will be seeking assurances that Sussex Police is now working to tackle the concerns expressed and is listening to their front line staff to help redesign and refocus processes.”

Other areas on discussion include: Policing of Child Sexual Exploitation; investment and expected improvements in the 101 contact service, and the outcome of targeted drink and drug driving campaign.
