Rock legend joins PCC cheque presentation in Heathfield

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne was joined by Roger Daltrey at a cheque presentation for local charity, Heathfield Works!

The Who singer was speaking at the Tomorrow’s People awards ceremony at the Heathfield Youth Centre on Friday 20 September. Mrs Bourne, also a guest, was there to present a cheque for £5,000 from her Safer in Sussex Community Fund.

Mrs Bourne said: “I am delighted that high profile celebrities are lending their support to local charities.

“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to talk to the many young people whose lives have been turned around by their involvement in programmes run by Heathfield Works! It is a great example of an innovative local project that aims to make a difference to communities.

Project manager of Heathfield Works! Councillor Rupert Simmons said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant from the Police & Crime Commissioner’s Community Fund. It will help make a valuable contribution towards our scheme to find employment or further education opportunities for our Young People in the area, who are not in employment, education or training. Providing them with positive futures enables them to take charge of their own lives and gain new confidence.”

The Safer in Sussex Community Fund helps local voluntary and community groups tackle crime and improve community safety by providing financial support to projects and services that address the priorities outlined in the Police and Crime Plan.

Awards of up to £5,000 will be granted for projects that meet the funding criteria following consideration by the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner and approval by the PCC. In exceptional circumstances the Commissioner will consider requests for funding above £5,000. Bids will be considered and funding awarded on a quarterly basis.

Since the Safer in Sussex Community Fund launched in December 2013 over 150 applications have been submitted and more than £400,000 made available by PCC Katy Bourne to support local crime reduction and community safety initiatives.
