Commenting ahead of the meeting, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “Alcohol related crime tends to increase over the summer months, which is why I want to find out what work is underway by Sussex Police, in partnership with other authorities and agencies, to address this issue and reduce the impact on residents.
“In 2014, Hastings was declared a Local Alcohol Action Area by the Home Office as part of a 15-month scheme to address problems caused by alcohol, such as violent crime and anti-social behaviour. Now this project has concluded I want to know whether it has been a success and how learnings will be shared across the other districts in Sussex in order to tackle this issue from a county-wide perspective.
Also on the agenda at Friday’s meeting is the Force’s ongoing response to domestic abuse (following criticism last year from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary that all police forces need to do more to support victims); increases in crime reporting; and public engagement around the new local policing model (which was announced by the Chief Constable in March 2015).
“The topics I question the Chief Constable on during these meetings are informed by the issues and concerns that local people tell me about”, added Mrs Bourne.
“I’d like to encourage residents to tune into the meeting and to continue to contact me with their views and experiences of policing and crime, so that I can ensure that policing priorities accurately represent the needs of the public.”
