We are currently recruiting for Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) in Eastbourne.. In this section you will find out about what volunteer roles are available in our office and information about how to apply. We accept forms from all areas and will contact you when a place becomes available.
About the ICV role
The Office of the Sussex PCC manages up to 50 dedicated volunteers who undertake vital duties for its Independent Custody Visiting (ICV) scheme. Representatives from the community are recruited and appointed on a geographical basis to visit the five police custody centres in Sussex (Brighton, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing). Unannounced visits are made by pairs of visitors at varying times of the day and night to ensure a consistent pattern of visits. After every visit, the pair of visitors complete a written report form about their findings, which is then passed onto the ICV Scheme Manager at the Office of the Sussex PCC.

New applications from interested custody visitors will not be accepted if they are currently an appropriate adult in the same area. This is due to a conflict of interests in the two roles, as custody visitors may, on occasion, have cause to give critical feedback regarding the provision of appropriate adult services in the area they visit. Therefore, the independence element of the custody visitor role precludes one person covering both ICV and AA roles in a suite. Exceptions
ICVs may act as an AA if:
- in relation to a child, they are the parent or guardian; or
- in relation to a vulnerable adult, they are a relative, guardian or other person responsible for their care or custody.

How does the recruitment process work?
To apply for a role as ICV you'll first need to complete an application form. You will then be invited for an interview by the Office of the Sussex PCC.
On receipt of references and completion of the vetting process successful applicants are then appointed to a panel of people available to visit the custody centre in their area. Full training is given to all the volunteers when they begin their role and to enhance their role throughout the year further training is given on a variety of issues such as mental health, children in custody. Volunteers are also given regular updates on the work of the PCC and their Office and findings from reports and inspections that all help them carry out their role.
The work carried out by Independent Custody Visitors is entirely voluntary, but travelling expenses are payable.

What is the ICV panel?
Each area has its own panel which is led by a local Co-ordinator. They provide support to the volunteers on their panel alongside the local custody Inspector. Each panel holds bi-annual meetings to discuss issues arising from visits. Any relevant information is then shared with the police at local and force level, as well as to the Office of the Sussex PCC. Each Panel Co-ordinator is responsible for organising the rota of visits to the custody centre.
